The single most untapped competitive advantage is teamwork!
Do you know there are five behaviours that predict how effective and productive a team is? What if you could tap into these five behaviours for your team?
Cathy is the first person in the wider Wellington Region accredited to facilitate the "Five Behaviors of a Cohesive Team" programme, and it's amazing!
Over the next five months, we will be covering the five behaviours that are key to making highly effective and productive teams: Trust, Engaging in Productive Conflict, Commitment, Accountability, and focussing on Collective Results.
The first and most critical behavior is Trust.
Most people think of trust as being able to predict how people will behave in particular situations. Or trusting that people will do what they say they'll do. But in the context of having a team functioning at its optimum, trust needs to go further than this. It's about creating a level of trust based on vulnerability, with people being able to be genuinely transparent and honest with each other. Only then can you use everyone's personalities and strengths to the max!
How open and honest are your team members able to be with each other?
How well do you know each other's strengths and limitations?
How willing are people to admit they don't know the answer or that they've made a mistake?
How willing are they to apologise when they let the team down?
When there is this type of atmosphere in a team, with people able to be open and honest with each other, the dynamic completely changes. People can bring their whole selves to the team, and the power is undeniable!
So, how do I build TRUST in my team?
There are several ways to help build trust in a team. One important aspect is for people to understand where everyone is coming from - how they communicate and react in different situations. Using a tool like Everything DiSC with the whole team is a great way to explore how different people react in different situations, but also how this can be perceived by others. This is a really good basis for helping to build that trust - helping people understand each other better is vital! This then also helps to safeguard against those misunderstandings that break down those relationships in the team and really affect trust.
